How does an AED help in a cardiac emergency?

An AED assists during a cardiac emergency by analyzing the victim's heart rhythm through adhesive electrode pads placed on the chest. The device determines whether the heart is in a shockable rhythm, such as ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia. If a shock is needed, the AED will prompt the user to deliver it, or in some models, automatically administer the shock.

The electrical shock briefly stops the heart’s abnormal activity, giving it a chance to reset into a normal rhythm. This process, called defibrillation, is most effective when performed quickly after the onset of cardiac arrest. In conjunction with high-quality CPR, the AED helps maintain circulation to vital organs and gives the person the best chance of recovery before emergency medical services arrive.

What is an AED, and why is it important?

What is an AED, and why is it important?
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable, life-saving medical device designed to treat people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). During SCA, the heart unexpectedly stops beating effectively, often due to an abnormal rhythm called ventricular fibrillation. An AED works by delivering a controlled electric shock to the heart, which can help reset the heart’s rhythm and restore normal function.

AEDs are critically important because time is of the essence during cardiac emergencies. Every minute that passes without defibrillation reduces a person’s chance of survival by 7–10%. When used within the first few minutes, especially in combination with CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), an AED can significantly increase survival rates. These devices are designed to be easy to use, even by bystanders with minimal training, making them a vital tool in public places like schools, airports, gyms, and offices.
